Check Winter Sports Options

Winter sports travel insurance must be selected around the activities you actually plan to do. With SoEasy Travel Insurance, skiing and other eligible recreational winter activities require the WINTER SPORTS (SKI)/ SUMMER SPORTS EXTENSION on an eligible Single Trip plan. Do not purchase ordinary travel insurance and assume that time on the slopes is covered.

Winter holidays can combine flights, accommodation, lift passes, lessons, rented equipment and activities in a remote mountain environment. The right policy is not simply the cheapest certificate: it should match the traveller, complete itinerary, destination, dates and intended activities.

This guide explains the SoEasy winter sports option and the checks that remain essential before purchase. It does not replace the selected certificate, benefits table or policy wording, which determine whether a particular event and expense are covered.

Does ordinary travel insurance cover skiing and snowboarding automatically?

What Is Winter Sports Travel Insurance?

Winter sports travel insurance is travel cover selected with terms that specifically address eligible winter activities. Depending on the insurer, this may be a specialist policy or an optional extension added to a broader travel insurance contract.

For SoEasy Travel Insurance, winter sports are not automatically included in the standard policy. The relevant option is named WINTER SPORTS (SKI)/ SUMMER SPORTS EXTENSION and must be selected with an eligible contract before the purchase is completed.

01

Recreational skiing

Skiing within recognised ski centres and on marked slopes, subject to the extension wording.

02

Snowboarding

Recreational snowboarding in eligible recognised ski areas, within the applicable conditions.

03

Amateur activities

The extension is designed for eligible amateur recreational participation, not professional sport.

04

Specified off-piste skiing

Only where the wording permits it, with a certified guide and outside dangerous or prohibited areas.

These descriptions are not a complete activity list or a guarantee of payment. Good winter sports travel insurance planning means checking the extension wording, general exclusions, benefit limits and the circumstances in which a claim may be assessed.

Do You Need the Winter Sports (Ski) Extension?

Yes, if you want SoEasy cover to apply to eligible skiing, snowboarding or another activity included by the extension. Select either SCHENGEN TRAVELER – SINGLE TRIP or WORLDWIDE TRAVELER – SINGLE TRIP, according to your destination and eligibility, and add the WINTER SPORTS (SKI)/ SUMMER SPORTS EXTENSION before completing the purchase.

Standard selection

Travel insurance without the extension

Do not assume that skiing, snowboarding or other winter activities are insured merely because the destination and dates appear on the certificate.

Required for eligible winter activities

Single Trip plus the winter sports extension

The additional extension activates its specific winter-sports terms, limits and exclusions for the activities described in the wording.

Add the extension before completing the purchase

Do not plan to add it later through a simple amendment. If the policy is issued without the required extension, it may need to be cancelled and reissued, subject to the applicable conditions and timing.

What Can the Winter Sports Extension Cover?

The SoEasy extension is offered on certain contracts for an additional premium. Its published description includes amateur recreational sports, water sports, skiing and snowboarding in recognised ski centres with organised, marked slopes or routes for public use.

  • Eligible amateur recreational winter activities
  • Skiing within recognised centres and marked slopes
  • Snowboarding under the applicable resort conditions
  • Specified off-piste skiing with a certified guide
  • Emergency hospital medical expenses up to the selected limit
  • Winter/summer sports cover for a maximum of 15 days

Do not interpret winter sports travel insurance as automatic cover for every snow activity or every expense arising at a resort. Ski equipment, piste closure, avalanche disruption, mountain rescue, search operations, evacuation, unused passes and cancellation must each be checked against the selected benefits table and wording.

Important Limits and Exclusions to Check

The extension is intended for amateur recreational activities. Competitions, contests and professional or work-related participation are not covered. Travellers must act reasonably, follow local safety rules and warnings, use appropriate equipment and avoid areas designated as dangerous or prohibited.

Off-piste skiing is not unrestricted. The published SoEasy conditions allow it only when the skier is accompanied by a certified guide and the area has not been classified as dangerous or prohibited. A traveller should never treat the presence of a guide as permission to ignore local closures or official warnings.

High-risk activities can remain excluded even after purchasing the extension. Confirm the precise planned activity rather than relying on broad phrases such as “adventure sports” or “winter holiday”.

Winter Sports Travel Insurance for Schengen Trips

Schengen travel medical insurance and winter sports protection serve different purposes. Under Article 15 of the EU Visa Code, applicants for a uniform Schengen visa generally need adequate travel medical insurance valid for the required territory and period, with at least €30,000 of coverage for the specified medical and repatriation purposes.

Meeting that visa requirement does not automatically insure skiing or snowboarding. A traveller taking a ski holiday in Austria, France, Switzerland, Italy or another Schengen destination should check both requirements: the certificate needed for the visa, where applicable, and the separate winter sports extension needed for eligible slope activities.

Read our Schengen travel insurance requirements guide for the visa rules. Your visa position and your sports cover should both be correct before departure.

What to Do If You Are Injured on the Slopes

Obtain urgent help first and contact the assistance service shown on the insurance documents as soon as reasonably possible. Follow the assistance team’s instructions and any pre-authorisation rules in the selected policy.

Keep the ski-patrol or resort report, medical records, prescriptions, invoices, receipts and proof of payment. Record where the incident happened, whether it occurred on or off a marked slope, who was present and which local authority or guide attended. Claims are assessed under the policy terms and evidence, so the extension does not guarantee that every expense will be reimbursed.

The safest decision happens before you reach the slopes

Choose the policy around your real winter itinerary and activities. Confirm the extension during the quotation, understand where and how you may ski, and check the benefits and exclusions instead of relying on the phrase “winter sports cover” alone.

Keep the insurance documents and assistance contacts accessible throughout the journey. If plans change, verify the effect on cover before participating in a different activity or entering a restricted area.

Winter sports FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Clear answers about ski travel insurance, the required extension and key activity restrictions.

Is skiing automatically covered by standard travel insurance?

No. Under the SoEasy options explained here, eligible skiing and other winter activities require the WINTER SPORTS (SKI)/ SUMMER SPORTS EXTENSION on an eligible Single Trip plan.

Which SoEasy plans allow the winter sports extension?

Select either SCHENGEN TRAVELER – SINGLE TRIP or WORLDWIDE TRAVELER – SINGLE TRIP, according to the journey and eligibility, then add the WINTER SPORTS (SKI)/ SUMMER SPORTS EXTENSION before purchase.

Does the extension cover snowboarding?

The published SoEasy description includes snowboarding within recognised ski centres with marked slopes, subject to the extension wording, benefit limits, safety requirements and general exclusions.

Is off-piste skiing covered?

Only under the stated conditions: the skier must be accompanied by a certified guide and the area must not be designated as dangerous or prohibited. Review the exact wording before participating.

How long does the winter sports extension apply?

The published SoEasy conditions limit winter/summer sports coverage to a maximum of 15 days. Check how this applies to your complete travel period and selected certificate.

Can I add the extension after buying the policy?

Do not rely on a later amendment. Select the extension before completing the purchase. A policy issued without it may need to be cancelled and reissued, subject to the applicable conditions.

Does Schengen visa insurance automatically include skiing?

No. Schengen visa medical insurance requirements and winter sports activity cover are separate. A visa-compliant certificate does not by itself include skiing or snowboarding; the relevant extension must also be selected.
