Ski Holiday InsuranceWhat does it actually cover?
A ski trip combines ordinary travel risks with activity-specific conditions. Learn what to check for medical emergencies, equipment, disruption, marked slopes and the required winter sports extension.
Ski holiday insurance should be selected around the entire trip, not only the time spent on the mountain. Flights, accommodation, medical emergencies and travel disruption belong to the wider holiday, while skiing introduces its own extension, activity rules and exclusions.
That distinction matters because a policy can cover ordinary travel events without covering an injury connected with skiing. It can also include emergency medical benefits while excluding ski equipment from its baggage section. Reading only the product name is therefore not enough.
This guide explains how the main parts fit together for the SoEasy options discussed on AnyTravelInsurance.com. Exact benefits, limits, excesses and exclusions depend on the live quotation, certificate, Benefits Table and policy wording.
What Does Ski Holiday Insurance Cover?
Ski holiday insurance can combine general travel benefits with a specific winter sports extension. The general contract may address insured events such as emergency medical treatment, assistance and certain travel problems. The extension determines whether eligible recreational skiing and snowboarding fall within the activity terms.
For the SoEasy products explained here, the published winter sports information confirms emergency hospital medical expenses caused by injuries during eligible winter sports, up to the amount shown in the selected Benefits Table. It also describes amateur recreational skiing and snowboarding in recognised ski centres with organised, marked slopes or routes for public use.
Medical emergency
Eligible emergency hospital treatment following a covered winter sports injury, subject to the selected limit.
Slope activity
Amateur recreational skiing or snowboarding under the extension’s resort and safety conditions.
Travel benefits
Only the benefits and insured events shown in the selected contract, with their stated limits and excesses.
24-hour assistance
Contact information in the issued documents for urgent guidance and coordination during the journey.
These categories do not mean every expense following an incident will be paid. The cause, activity, location, safety behaviour, documents and individual benefit terms all remain relevant to a claim.
Why Does a Ski Holiday Need the Winter Sports Extension?
Standard travel insurance should not be treated as automatic skiing cover. For the SoEasy options described here, add the exact WINTER SPORTS (SKI)/ SUMMER SPORTS EXTENSION to an eligible SCHENGEN TRAVELER – SINGLE TRIP or WORLDWIDE TRAVELER – SINGLE TRIP selection, according to the itinerary and availability.
Without the sports extension
The destination may be insured for ordinary travel risks, but an incident connected with skiing should not be assumed to fall within cover.
Eligible Single Trip plus extension
The contract includes the extension’s activity definitions, marked-slope conditions, 15-day limit and specific exclusions.
If the policy is already issued without it, do not ski on the assumption that a later request has changed the contract. Contact SoEasy before travel and wait until revised documents confirm any approved amendment.

Does Ski Holiday Insurance Cover Medical Treatment?
The published SoEasy FAQ states that the sports extension includes emergency medical expenses in a hospital resulting from winter sports injuries, up to the amount stated in the Benefits Table. That is the clearest confirmed ski-specific benefit in the public information.
It does not remove the rest of the contract. Medical definitions, exclusions, excesses, assistance requirements and the circumstances of the incident still apply. A pre-existing condition, professional participation, competition, prohibited area or another general exclusion may change the outcome.
For a serious incident requiring hospital admission, contact the assistance service as soon as possible. If an emergency prevents contact beforehand, call as soon as reasonably possible afterwards. The correct numbers and methods are included in the issued certificate and confirmation email.
- Contact ski patrol or local emergency services first where needed
- Notify the assistance service using the issued policy documents
- Keep medical records, reports, prescriptions and original invoices
- Record the piste, resort and circumstances of the incident
- Retain proof that the slope was open and permitted for public use
- Follow approval instructions for transport, transfer or repatriation
Are Skis and Snowboards Covered as Baggage?
Do not assume they are. The current SoEasy public FAQ lists ski and golf equipment among the excluded items in its general baggage section. That means ordinary baggage wording must not be presented as protection for owned, borrowed or rented skis, snowboards, poles, boots or specialist equipment.
This distinction is easy to miss: the winter sports extension can address eligible participation and emergency hospital medical expenses without converting ski equipment into covered baggage. Equipment theft, accidental damage, airline delay, rental replacement and loss must each be checked separately.
Before travelling, review the selected wording and consider the protection offered by the airline, equipment-rental company, card provider or a separate specialist product. Keep rental agreements, baggage tags and purchase receipts, but never describe reimbursement as guaranteed unless the applicable contract confirms it.
Does It Cover Mountain Rescue or Helicopter Evacuation?
Emergency medical transport and mountain rescue are not interchangeable terms. A contract may contain medical transportation or repatriation benefits, yet still define, limit or exclude search operations, piste rescue, mountain recovery or helicopter attendance differently.
Therefore, ski holiday insurance should not be advertised as automatically paying every rescue invoice. Check the Benefits Table and definitions for search and rescue, ambulance, medical evacuation and repatriation. Also confirm whether prior assistance approval is required whenever the circumstances allow it.
Resort teams decide the immediate safety response. The insurer or assistance service then assesses the insurance position under the contract. Always obtain the patrol report and an itemised invoice showing who provided the service and why it was medically necessary.
Does It Cover Cancellation, Piste Closure or an Unused Ski Pass?
A winter sports extension does not automatically insure the price of the whole holiday. Trip cancellation, transport disruption, accommodation, lessons, equipment hire, piste closure and unused lift passes are different potential losses and require their own insured benefit and covered reason.
For example, bad weather may close a lift without triggering reimbursement under a policy that has no piste-closure benefit. Choosing not to ski because visibility is poor is also different from an insured medical event. Likewise, cancellation benefits normally apply only to the defined reasons in the selected wording—not simply because plans changed.
Skiing-related eligibility
Determines whether the stated recreational winter activity falls within the extension’s terms and restrictions.
Financial holiday losses
Cancellation, disruption, equipment, rescue and unused bookings need their own benefit wording and covered event.
Compare the real value of prepaid bookings with the applicable policy limits before purchase. Do not rely on a headline such as “comprehensive” without checking the Benefits Table.
Where and How Can You Ski?
The published extension describes skiing and snowboarding within recognised ski centres using organised, marked slopes or routes for public use. Follow the piste classification, official warnings, closures and local safety instructions.
Off-piste skiing is permitted only under stated conditions: the skier must be accompanied by a certified guide, and the area must not have been characterised as dangerous or prohibited. An experienced friend is not a substitute for a certified guide, and a guide cannot override an official closure.
- Participate as an amateur recreational skier or snowboarder
- Use recognised centres and marked, organised public slopes
- Stay within personal ability and use suitable safety equipment
- Respect closures, avalanche notices and resort instructions
- Use a certified guide for eligible off-piste skiing
- Avoid competitions, contests and professional participation
Our winter sports covered by travel insurance guide separates activities explicitly named in the public information from those requiring individual confirmation.
How Long Does the Winter Sports Cover Last?
The published Winter/Summer Sports Extension is limited to a maximum of 15 days. This activity limit is separate from the overall duration of the journey.
A three-week holiday could therefore contain fewer than 15 skiing days, but the traveller should confirm how the extension is recorded and applied. Buying insurance for a longer journey does not automatically lengthen the winter sports period.
If the planned activity exceeds 15 days, request clarification before purchasing. Never shorten dates, omit part of the trip or provide inaccurate information to fit a product limit.
Ski Holiday Insurance for Families and Groups
Families can generally declare all travellers under one family contract rather than issue a separate policy for each person. The SoEasy FAQ states that children under 16 are insured only when travelling with one or both insured adults. Every person who needs cover must be declared accurately during purchase.
Do not assume the strongest skier’s experience changes the conditions for everyone else. Check that each participant is eligible, that the extension applies to all declared people who will ski and that children use appropriate instruction, equipment and supervised slopes.
For friends travelling together, group administration may simplify the documents, but the itinerary, activity and personal details still need to be correct. If some travellers will not ski, verify how the live quotation applies the optional extension and premium rather than guessing.
How Much Does Ski Holiday Insurance Cost?
There is no reliable universal price. The live premium can depend on destination, trip duration, number and age of travellers, coverage level, provider and optional extensions. Adding winter sports increases the premium because it introduces an additional insured risk under stated conditions.
Use the real itinerary when comparing prices. Enter the departure country, every destination and transit country, the full journey dates and all travellers. Then compare benefits and exclusions—not only the lowest price.
You can compare ski holiday insurance options online. Select an eligible Single Trip plan and add the WINTER SPORTS (SKI)/ SUMMER SPORTS EXTENSION before purchase. Quotations and purchases are completed on the external SoEasy Travel Insurance platform.
Ski Holiday Insurance and Schengen Visa Requirements
Schengen travel medical insurance and skiing protection answer different questions. Under Article 15 of the EU Visa Code, applicants for a uniform visa must demonstrate adequate travel medical insurance for the relevant territory and period, with at least €30,000 for the specified urgent medical and repatriation purposes.
Meeting the visa requirement does not activate the winter sports extension. Someone visiting Austria, France, Italy, Switzerland, Greece or another Schengen ski destination may need to satisfy both: the visa medical-insurance requirement and the separate policy conditions for skiing.
Review our Schengen travel insurance requirements guide and make sure the final certificate, territory, dates and sports option match the actual trip.
How to Choose Ski Holiday Insurance
Build the policy around the bookings and activities you genuinely plan, then verify the documents before departure.
Map the complete journey
Record the correct departure country, full dates, ski destination, stopovers and every country visited during the same trip.
List the winter activities
Separate skiing and snowboarding from snow parks, sledding, snowmobiling, racing or any other activity that needs confirmation.
Add the correct extension
Select an eligible Single Trip option and add WINTER SPORTS (SKI)/ SUMMER SPORTS EXTENSION before payment.
Check the expensive gaps
Review medical limits, excesses, rescue, equipment, cancellation, interruption, liability and unused booking terms separately.
Verify and store the documents
Check names, dates, territory and extension, then save the certificate, wording, Benefits Table and assistance contacts offline.
The sports extension addresses eligible activities under its conditions. Equipment, rescue, cancellation, piste closure, liability and unused bookings must be checked against separate benefits, definitions and exclusions.

Ski holiday FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Clear answers about medical treatment, equipment, rescue, the sports extension and important limits.
Does standard travel insurance cover a ski holiday?
Do not assume it does. For the SoEasy products discussed here, eligible amateur recreational skiing requires the WINTER SPORTS (SKI)/ SUMMER SPORTS EXTENSION on an eligible Single Trip plan.
What medical cover does the winter sports extension provide?
The published SoEasy FAQ confirms emergency medical expenses in a hospital caused by winter sports injuries, up to the amount in the selected Benefits Table and subject to the full contract.
Are skis and snowboards covered as baggage?
Do not assume they are. The current SoEasy public FAQ lists ski and golf equipment among items excluded from the general baggage section. Check any separate specialist protection before travelling.
Does the policy automatically cover mountain rescue?
No automatic promise should be made. Search, mountain rescue, helicopter attendance, medical evacuation and repatriation must be checked individually against the selected benefits, definitions, limits, exclusions and assistance requirements.
Is off-piste skiing included?
Only under the published conditions: the skier must be accompanied by a certified guide, and the area must not be characterised as dangerous or prohibited. All policy and safety conditions still apply.
How many skiing days can the extension cover?
The published winter/summer sports coverage is limited to a maximum of 15 days. The overall journey may have a different duration, so review both periods.
Does ski holiday insurance cover piste closure or unused lift passes?
Not automatically. Piste closure, unused passes, lessons, equipment hire, accommodation and cancellation require a corresponding benefit and covered reason in the selected wording.
Does Schengen visa insurance include skiing?
No. Schengen travel medical insurance requirements and winter sports activity protection are separate. A visa-compliant certificate does not by itself activate the ski extension.
