Georgia SIM Cards & eSIMsA Practical Travel Guide
A local SIM, a local eSIM or a travel data plan can keep you connected in Georgia. The useful questions are whether your phone supports it, what the package includes and when it starts.

Where can you buy a SIM in Georgia?
At the airport
Buying on arrival can be convenient if you want help getting connected before leaving the terminal. Confirm opening hours and available packages for your arrival.
At a city branch
A city branch gives you another opportunity to discuss your phone, itinerary and calling needs. If you plan to wait until town, save your accommodation address, transfer details and a way to contact your host before the flight.
Online
An eSIM can reduce the need to find a shop, provided your device and registration are accepted. Read the plan’s activation policy before installing: installation and the start of paid validity are not always the same event.
For registration, take your passport to the shop and check which document the operator accepts. Cellfie’s privacy notice, for example, identifies passport and identity-document information among the data it processes. If online identification fails with your document, ask the operator about an in-person alternative.
Six checks before you pay
Keep the package details open while you make these checks. They matter more than whether the product is labelled “tourist”, “local” or “unlimited”.

How much mobile data should you choose?
Use your own phone’s recent mobile-data history as a starting point. Think about what will change on this trip: more navigation, video uploads, streaming, work calls or sharing a connection with a laptop.
A traveller mainly using messages and saved maps has a different requirement from someone uploading videos each evening. Plan around those activities, the length of the trip and whether you can top up easily.

Set up your connection before you need it

Install and label the new line
Give it a clear name such as “Georgia data” so you can distinguish it from your home SIM.
Choose the mobile-data line
Select the new package for internet use. Review automatic data switching so the phone does not fall back to another line unexpectedly.

Can you keep your home number active?
On a supported dual-SIM phone, you can use separate lines for data and calls. Apple describes this in its dual-SIM guidance. Decide which line should handle each service before you travel.
Keeping your home number available may be useful for verification texts, but a data-only travel eSIM cannot receive ordinary SMS sent to that number. Ask your home operator how roaming, incoming calls and any daily pass are charged. Switching off its data roaming does not disable every other chargeable service.
Plan for the route beyond Tbilisi
Check your actual destinations on the operator’s coverage map, especially if your itinerary includes smaller settlements or mountain excursions. - Save accommodation addresses in a form you can show locally, plus contact details and check-in instructions.
- Download the map areas you will need and confirm that they open without internet.
- Keep booking confirmations and transport details available on the device.
- Charge your phone before a long excursion and consider a power bank for a day of navigation.
Google Maps supports downloaded areas where available, but its offline-map guidance explains the limits: offline walking, cycling and public-transport directions are unavailable, and driving loses live traffic and alternative routes. Do not assume a downloaded city map provides offline hiking navigation.
Before leaving the shop or airport
Check that mobile internet works with Wi-Fi switched off, that the expiry date matches what you bought, and that you know how to reach the operator. Save the receipt, package name and support instructions. If calls are included and you need them, confirm which numbers you can call.
If an installed eSIM has no internet, check the selected data line, activation status, balance and provider-specified network settings first. Contact support before deleting the profile: reinstalling or transferring an eSIM follows the operator’s own process.
